I am sure you’re wondering if I’ve lost my mind connecting snorkeling, an almond butter and banana sandwich and being in the flow. Stick with me – it’s a great connection! : )
Last week I was talking to my wonderful hairstylist, Aly, about her wedding in Jamaica. She was talking about snorkeling with the puffer fish, octopus, coral and beautiful scenery she saw. As she told me some of these highlights, she made a wonderful realization that is so fitting for all of us — especially during this busy time of the year!
She said she loves snorkeling so much “because when you are doing it, all you focus on is your breathing and the beauty you see. Nothing else distracts you.”
My immediate response was, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could live with more of that energy?”
And I really believe that is such a great analogy to use not only working with kids but also adults. We are surrounded by so many beautiful moments. But many of us go through the motions, allowing our subconscious mind to be on auto pilot and we miss so much. What if we focus on our breathing (we can’t focus on our breath and think at the same time) and notice the beauty around us?
Which leads me to another related story that happened the morning of my haircut. I’d been having a stretch of feeling out of flow. Interestingly, when you don’t have a boss giving you expectations and to do lists…you do an amazing job of giving yourself them! Running my business has been learning on so many levels, but an important one lately has been centered around me getting grounded and not staying in DO mode but rather BE mode. Now I am sure many of you reading this know all about DO mode. You have kids to care for, jobs to do, houses to clean, significant others to be present for and then a maybe couple (smile) extra things on your plate with the holidays approaching.
DOing is something many of us are very good at!
What I have learned over and over in the last 3 years especially is that when I take time to BREATHE and get centered, my life flows. I don’t feel like I’m swimming upstream every moment. And the difference is absolutely amazing!
When I have bills to pay, I know the last thing it FEELS like I should DO is BE! LOL!
But I spent time breathing, with my candle and incense and burning and some great music playing. I would breathe, write. Breathe more, write. I moved to the music. I hummed. I chanted along with a song or two. I left my meditation area feeling so centered and alive. And I got a phone call. And in 30 minutes, I had a new client.
I decided to ride my bike while doing some of the writing I planned on doing. No worries, I have my bike inside on a trainer. : ) I rode and wrote and had some great ideas flowing. Got off my bike and got another phone call. This time an exploration session scheduled for another potential client!
I was hungry and excited about feeling in a flow again!! So I stood in the kitchen wondering what I could eat for a healthy, feed-my-body-and-soul lunch. I decided on an almond butter and banana sandwich. As I was making it, I got goosebumps. I realized I hadn’t had one of these in forever—-and who does it remind me of? My Dad.
I knew it was NO COINCIDENCE that as I made the choice to get re-aligned with the truth of who I am… When I made the decision to not DO a bunch of tasks off my to do list, but rather to BE, by breathing, biking, taking time to get in the flow again… That I would decide on an almond butter and banana sandwich! (My Dad made perfect looking peanut butter and banana sandwiches ~it’s something I remember very vividly about him.)
In that moment, I stood in my kitchen, tears filled my eyes, I picked up Rylie, hugged him and smiled KNOWING my Dad was with me. He was supporting me.
(My Dad owned his own business and I never got the chance to talk to him about DOing vs BEing. But I’m now imagining that on the days he would take long drives to check on a new job to bid on, that was his way of BEing.)
My wish for each of you making the time to read this is that you give yourself the gift of BEing instead of just DOing.
When we quiet our minds and bodies, get centered and grounded in our truth, we gain clarity on what is important to do. We can accomplish more. And we allow ourselves the opportunity to see and connect with the beauty around us.
We don’t have to be snorkeling in Jamaica to find beauty! But if we make time to focus on our breath, we’ll notice how our mind stops racing and be present for the miracles happening right around us. Even in a simple almond butter and banana sandwich. : )
I’m so grateful for this wonderful day and the fact that I am able to be aware of this all now! My life feels more full! Even though I, too, get caught up in the hustle and bustle and worries of life, it’s amazing what happens when I make the conscious decision to change that pattern.
You can do the same! And you can teach your children to do the same! THAT is a thought that creates immediate beauty in my mind! : )
